How many times have you been to a networking event and didn’t feel like drinking, or you only have an hour before you have to pick up your kid, and your only non-alcoholic option is water? It’s so lame. Meet Melissa Saubers. She made a choice more than two years ago to give up alcohol entirely, and live an alcohol-free life. Not because she racked up a bunch of DUIs, or landed in jail (like me ), but because she knew she was misusing it and she knew she would be a better person without it. Melissa is on a mission to normalize non-alcoholic drink options in our world. Not specifically for recovering alcoholics, although we can have them too, but for all the people in the world who don’t feel like drinking booze for one of a million reasons. With all the marketing saturating our little brains celebrating alcohol use for every occasion on the planet, it becomes difficult to remember that some people just don’t drink. Sometimes people want to go out and do something fun and they don’t feel like drinking that night, some people don’t enjoy drinking at all, and some can’t drink because of health issues, or fitness issues, or a myriad of other reasons. Unfortunately, every party, networking event, celebration, ceremony, house warming, baby shower, and every other thing you can think of, predominantly revolve around alcohol. Most people don’t spend any time considering what sort of non-alcoholic drinks they will serve, they grab a few two liter bottles of liquid acid and call it a day. And those of us who do not drink have dealt with it because we are the minority. I love this movement of bringing awareness to the millions of people who just don’t drink. Regardless of their reasoning. The truth is, we deserve to have awesome beverages, too. I would love for someone to care about my non-drinking population and actually craft some mocktails that are beautiful and taste amazing instead of treating me like I am ten years old and I can soda, juice, or a Shirley Temple. I want to go somewhere and spend time with other people who enjoy having a clear mind and great conversation. The FIRST Sans Bar KC event is The Booze Free Bash on New Year's Eve!
